Are you Dealing with a Sinus Infection?

Symptoms

A sinus infection is a condition that affects the nasal cavity, which can be a little more challenging to treat and get rid of than the common cold. Everything from allergies, bacteria, and viruses can be responsible for a sinus infection. While a cold won’t cause sinus infections, it can create a hospitable environment for a sinus infection to occur after dealing with a cold.

When to See a Doctor

While some  acute forms of sinusitis will go away on their own, it is also important to know when you may need to turn to a medical professional for antibiotics or other treatment options. Simple at-home remedies for treating symptoms include over-the-counter nasal sprays, decongestants, expectorants, and sinus irrigation (e.g. Neti pot).

It’s important to see a physician for treatment if at home remedies don’t work, if symptoms such as fever, nasal discharge, facial pain and congestion last more than five to seven days, or if the symptoms resolve and then return. While fever isn’t a common symptom of sinusitis, it may develop if there is a chronic infection that is causing your sinusitis. In rare cases, acute sinusitis may turn into a chronic infection.
